December Reading Radar: Diving into the 9 Books to Wrap Up 2023

As the clock ticks down to say goodbye to 2023, it’s amazing how swiftly time zips by. The closing weeks mark the end of my literary journey for the year. I’d initially aimed for 20 books, but with an updated goal of a whopping 100 books, my sights are set on conquering the titles currently nestled in my Currently Reading stack. Picture this: 9 books vying to be the finale of my 100-book marathon. However, being the mood-driven reader I am, the lineup might just sway at the whim of my fancies. Let’s unveil at month’s end whether I’ll stick to this list or whimsy takes the reins!

Unlike past months, steeped in the comfort of historical romances that cocooned me, my choices for the grand finale of 2023 promise a flavorful variety.

Fiction Escapades

First on my list is the novella Resting Scrooge Face by Meghan Quinn, resonating perfectly with the festive aura. Additionally, diving into Agatha Christie‘s Hercule Poirot’s Christmas guarantees a thrilling plunge into the detective’s world—an enticing blind venture into Poirot’s mysteries. Fixing my craving for cozy mysteries will be Alexander McCall Smith‘s The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, a Botswana-based tale starring the endearingly named Precious Ramotswe. Lastly, the much-lauded Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese earns a spot, a recommendation sourced straight from Instagram.

Non-Fiction Explorations

This year, non-fiction feels amiss in my literary repertoire. Aiming to bridge this gap, I’ve set my sights on Richard Siken’s poetic marvel, Crush. The weight of Siken’s words packs a punch inversely proportional to its page count, compelling moments of contemplation with every verse. Delving deeper into Stoicism, I’ve started on John SellarsThe Pocket Stoic, an eye-opener in my ongoing pursuit of learning. Initially drawn to the title – and yes I judge a book by its cover – Mallory O’Meara‘s Girly Drinks provides an illumination on the historical facets of alcohol and the pivotal role women played in shaping our drinking culture. Another book I’ve snapped up as I was intrigued by the title’s promise, How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis, may be a potential guide to navigating the chaos and triumphing in creating an organized haven. Lastly, I am listening to Sir Patrick Stewart‘s memoir Making It So, a recommendation stemming from his delightful storytelling during a guest appearance on the Conan Needs A Friend podcast.

The Journey Ahead

These final 9 titles for 2023 stand tall, at least for now. Here’s hoping that within the pages of these diverse narratives, I’ll emerge a tad wiser and kinder as we usher in 2024!
