A new series exploring the magic that happens when literature inspires us to create

What Happens When Reading Isn’t Enough?
You know that feeling when you close a book and something inside you is still buzzing? When the story has painted such vivid images in your mind, stirred such deep emotions, or sparked such profound thoughts that simply writing a traditional review feels… inadequate?
That restless creative energy—the need to do something with all the inspiration coursing through you—is exactly what Story Sparked Creations is about.
Welcome to Something Different
This isn’t your typical book review series. While I’ll still share my thoughts on plot, characters, and writing style, Story Sparked Creations goes one step further. Each post in this series features a book that moved me so deeply, I couldn’t help but create something tangible in response.
Maybe it’s a mini-zine filled with quotes and historical images. Perhaps it’s a piece of art, a playlist, a photo series, or even a recipe inspired by the story’s setting. The medium changes, but the heart remains the same: celebrating the incredible power of literature to inspire creativity beyond the page.
Why Create Instead of Just Review?
Because some books deserve more than star ratings and plot summaries. Some stories:
✨ Paint pictures so vivid you need to see them in the real world
✨ Stir emotions so deep you need to express them through your hands
✨ Spark ideas so brilliant you need to explore them through different mediums
✨ Connect themes so powerfully you need to weave them into something new
When a book transforms how you see the world, why not transform something in return?
What You Can Expect
Each Story Sparked Creations post will include:
📚 A thoughtful book review covering all the elements you’d expect—plot, characters, themes, and my honest recommendations
🎨 The creative project inspired by the book, complete with behind-the-scenes process, materials used, and why I chose that particular medium
💭 The deeper connection exploring what it was about the story that sparked this creative response, and how the act of creating deepened my understanding of the book
The Inaugural Project: The Great Reclamation Mini-Zine
Our series launches with Rachel Heng’s The Great Reclamation, a stunning piece of Singapore historical fiction that inspired me to create an entire mini-zine. Combining powerful quotes from the novel with historical photographs from the same government reports Heng used in her research, this project became a meditation on memory, progress, and the weight of choices that define us.
It’s the perfect example of what happens when a book doesn’t just tell you a story—it compels you to become part of the creative conversation.
Join the Creative Journey
Story Sparked Creations is more than just a series—it’s an invitation. An invitation to:
- See books as springboards for your own creativity
- Engage with literature through multiple senses and mediums
- Share in the joy of creating something beautiful inspired by beautiful words
- Build community around the books that move us to make art
I hope these posts inspire you to pick up both the books I feature and maybe some art supplies too. Because the best stories don’t end when you close the cover—they echo and evolve, inspiring new creations long after the final page.
